City Parents Opting Out of Swine Flu Vaccine

As people across the country clamor for the swine flu vaccine, fewer than half of New York City parents with children in elementary school have given permission for their children to receive the vaccine at school.  At Public School 157 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where health officials opened the school vaccination effort on Wednesday, only a third of students had permission to receive it.
“The swine flu vaccine has not been out long enough for me to trust it,” said Sheena Ash, who has three children at the school. “They have never gotten a flu shot, and they’ve never gotten the flu.”

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) — New York City will declare a state of emergency to implement new resources to combat the spread of swine flu, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

Swisher Riding the Pine for Game Two

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to bench slumping outfielder Nick Swisher for Game 2 of the World Series.
Swisher went 0 for 3 in New York’s 6-1 loss in Wednesday night’s World Series opener. He is batting .114, with no homers and 12 strikeouts in the postseason.

Major League Baseball Dedicating First Four Games of Series to Community Service

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter today announced a first-of-its kind wager on the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies: The losing mayor will travel to the winning city to join the winning mayor in a volunteer service project, while wearing a jersey from the winning team.  In addition, the losing Mayor will cater lunch from a local establishment for the volunteers working with the winning Mayor. Ground Broken on New Staten Island Police Precinct

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney today broke ground on the new 121st Police Precinct Station House in the Graniteville section of Staten Island. The station house, a $63.6 million facility, is the first new precinct on Staten Island since 1962. Major felony crime on Staten Island has fallen 28 percent over the past eight years.

Jets offer season tix to general public

The New York Jets are making season tickets for the new Meadowlands stadium available to the general public, beginning Nov. 1, and are cutting the prices on some seats by as much as 50 percent.

Apple Tablet on the Horizon

According to the  Sydney Morning Herald, Apple is preparing to release a groundbreaking tablet computer in Australia and around the world early next year and has been in discussions with media companies about including their content on the device.
The device looks like a big iPhone, small enough to carry in a bag but too big for the pocket.  It will be a touch screen and mainly target people who want to read magazines, newspapers, and watch movies.

More Than 7,500 Ticketed In Latest Cell Phone Crackdown

The New York City Police Department’s latest crackdown on drivers who use handheld cell phones has netted nearly a million dollars for the city.
The 24-hour-crackdown resulted in 7,529 tickets being issued. Each ticket will cost drivers $130.
Three day-long crackdowns this year have now resulted in more than 23,000 tickets being handed out.

Woman who had affair with Phillips was fired

The ESPN production assistant whose affair with baseball analyst Steve Phillips led to his termination has also been fired from the sports network, a spokesman said Monday.
Mike Soltys, a representative of ESPN, said Monday that 22-year-old Brooke Hundley had been fired, but he did not say when or why.  I think we know why
